Explore Asia's Hidden Gems: Luxurious Lodges and Cultural Wonders
Dear Friends and Fellow Travellers,
As summer unfolds, we are delighted to share some of our recent trips and upcoming adventures. This month we explore our favourite places in Asia. Whether you're dreaming of luxurious escapes in India, Bhutan, Thailand, Laos or Cambodia we have you covered. It’s a journey through stunning landscapes, eco-luxury retreats, and authentic cultural encounters for the perfect off-the-beaten-path adventure. Let’s dive in!
Our Favorite Asian Bolt Holes
Asia offers a treasure trove of lodges and retreats, each providing a unique glimpse into the region’s diverse landscape and culture. From mountains to beaches; cities to hamlets in the jungle; the Mekong River; and islands of the coast of Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam. There is never enough time to see them all … Here are just few of our personal favorites.
Desa Hay, Bali, Indonesia
Not just a wonderful story that spans the lake country of Canada (where the Canadian owners continue to spend their summers on Hay Lake), but a labour of love and passion. Built by the owners, after an IT windfall, as a family compound and then turned into a magical little hotel with a “love the planet” ethos. Solar powered; net-zero on plastic and water use; mentorship within the local community and training for tourism jobs; and a scholarship fund which pays post-primary education for all the children in a nearby orphanage. With only 6 rooms a perfect buy out option.
&Beyond Punakha River Lodge, Bhutan
Just eight accommodations beside a bubbling river in a valley surrounded by rice paddies and the Himalayas – the thing of dreams. Built in Bhutanese style and located within easy striking distance to temples, flag-covered suspension bridges and mountain trails. Nearby is the famous Punakha Dzong (the ‘Palace of Great Happiness’), a massive structure built at the junction of two rivers and where all of Bhutan’s kings are crowned before they can ascend the throne in the capital city of Thimpu.
Rosewood Luang Prabang, Laos
Designed by world-renowned Bill Bensley this 23 room gem reflects the romance of the golden age of travel. The French-Lao architecture, for which the town is known, is reflected here with influences of ancient temples, lush gardens and tented accommodations where explorers may have plotted expeditions over maps. Gin & tonics are best enjoyed on the verandah of The Great House at sunset after a day of exploring the UNESCO heritage old city of Luang Prabang which sits on a peninsula in the Mekong River. Do not miss Luang Prabang or Laos on your South East Asia journey.
Himalayas Of The Grid
The Himalayas stretch for over 1,500 miles across the top of India and Pakistan taking in Nepal, Bhutan and Southern Tibet. As the planet warms and heaves under mass tourism this spiritual swath of mountains and villages becomes ever more alluring. Hill towns and places with names like Thimpu, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Shimla and Leh all waiting to be explored.
Ananda, Himalayas
Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Ananda blends traditional Indian wellness practices with modern luxury. Beautiful views, meandering gardens, sunrise yoga, and clean eating - the perfect beginning or end to a trip.
Glenburn Tea Estate, India
Perched on a hilltop with breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga, Glenburn Tea Estate invites you to explore emerald-green plantations and learn the art of tea-making. Sip the estate’s finest brew at sunset on a colonial-era verandah.

Scotland kilts and castles
On The Road
I just got back from Scotland in July and now fully understand the Scottish fascination with the South of Spain. What we loved about their gentle, cool summers and lush green hills and dales they have had enough of! Perfect for hiking, golfing, lake side picnics and castles at every turn.
A hearty thanks for orchestrating an incredible week. Not a single blip! What a memorable trip! Until our next trip, many many thanks.
JL & JA, Chicago, Illinois – Scotland 60th Birthday – July 2024
I just want to thank you again for the amazing job both of you did in pulling off a flawless week in Scotland. There is herding cats and then there is herding crazy cats and you managed to do the latter with limitless patience and good cheer. Our family had a memorable vacation that we will treasure forever. Thank you both for making it a reality.
